Homeschooling is teaching and learning activities that are carried out at home or in other words, family-based schools. Homeschooling itself is chosen by some people because it has several advantages. Among them are a curriculum that is customized to the needs of children and has flexibility. In homeschooling, the responsibility for the child's education lies entirely on the parents. The school system is standardized to meet the needs of children in general, while the homeschooling system is adapted to the needs of each child and their family conditions.
From my friends' discussions, there are positive and negative impacts of homeschooling. The positive impact such as children can get more attention from the teacher because the teacher only focuses on one student; it also has flexible learning hours and more focus on the child's ability because the homeschooling system is adapted to the needs of the children themselves. The other positive impact is we don't need to spend a lot of money to buy shoes, uniforms, and for our accommodation. They will also get more supervision from parents compared to regular schools, making parents less worried because they can always check on them.
There are also negative impacts such as the lack of socialisation because they don't have a lot of friends; the way of communicating with others becomes rigid due to the lack of interaction with many people; not having friends can make the attraction to learning for some people disappear and do not enjoy learning because it is not fun; it is also difficult to adapt to a new environment that can have an effect on the outside world. The other negative impact is they won’t get to attend school events like regular school, for example study trips. It is also more expensive because we have to hire a teacher that can understand multiple subjects.
The conclusion is that homeschooling has positive and negative impacts for someone who undergoes homeschooling learning activities and depending on the person who runs it. Some may feel more comfortable when the teacher only focuses on themselves, but some will feel less enjoyable to undergo homeschooling because of the lack of socialisation with friends. The success of homeschooling depends on the children themselves, because it is supportive for children who have anxiety and fear of the outside world. But it is not worth it for children who want to explore more about the world.
